Non-Return Valves (NRVs) are Recommended for Vertical Installation

NRVs prevent backflow from returning into the submeter that may damage or negatively affect submeter readings. If you will be installing submeters in the vertical position, we recommend having one on each line (NRVs are not needed for horizontal installation). Some properties may have NRVs already in place.
